I think we need to establish that for crimes that pass a certain monetary/wtf value, there can be no settlement. It must go to trial, and we must hear from the people responsible, regardless of how long it takes or how inconvenient for them it is.

This is also why I think New Yorkers have a different view on the pandemic than other people. We remember what March and April 2020 was like, we were the part of the country that got to witness how bad it could be. I remember the field hospital and the trucks full of bodies. I remember the sirens.

The thing that I remember most from the beginning of the pandemic was the complete uncertainty about how bad the virus was, and any postmortem that focuses on how things were now that is known and not how to deal with that uncertainty isn't doing anything to make the future better.

The thing that bothers me about our post-pandemic COVID discourse is how much of it isn't about how to do things better next time, it's playing Monday morning quarterback. It's not about learning, it's about spending years trying to win arguments that people had online from March 2020.
