A helpful warning for 10x developers. These days you gotta grind into a more-than-100x developer to compete, now that the "bird factor" is in play.

In 2016, speedrunners proved that the "trigger wild battle" and "generate IVs" RNG was unintentionally correlated, making perfect IVs and shiny IVs both impossible. In 2026, a romhacker noticed that Silph Scope causes IVs to be regenerated, meaning that all IVs *are* possible in Pokemon Tower!

It's amazing how they were able to include so many memorable characters to these games. Personally my favourite would have to be the sweet potato kid.

Certain textboxes close on their own. However, if you hold down the A button, they do not. Odd design choice.

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

oh, yeah this is from one of my projects. dear imgui these days supports generating font atlases at runtime, and peeking inside can even reveal info about what strings the program is rendering (you can see "debug", a shard of "file" and "the quick brown fox")

I was vaguely aware that font atlases are a thing (reducing the number of textures by embedding all the glyphs into a single image). What I did not realize was that they just get put into a Pile

An obscure functionality of Donkey Kong Country Returns is that if Donkey Kong spends 3 full attack cycles of a boss not damaging it, Professor Chops will pop up telling him what to do, e.g. "BOP NOW!" In the Mole Miner Max battle, the tip is particularly condescending, being simply "TRY HARDER".

The PC in every Pokémon Center allows you to connect to Bill's and Prof. Oak's computers over the network, just like a workstation connected to the Internet in the early days. The source code to Pokémon Red (1996) implies we are using System V UNIX.
