This is a great read and underscores that fighting car dependency is a basic quality of life issue. Lloyd makes an important here: Older residents who often oppose initiatives to reduce car dependency will also soon bear the burden. But they never imagine a future where they can't drive.

The life and death of May Pollard, 16, provides a window into the tragic effect that legislation and political rhetoric have had on trans people in America.

A group of TO civil society leaders (in a sea of people who aren't saying a peep) have created TO Reality Check to oppose the Island Airport expansion. Give them some time + share where you can. They've made it easy to send a letter to Liberal MPs who could stop all this today.

A police force under investigation should have zero hands on the driver's seat. You have been a councillor for 16 years. In that time, the police budget has almost doubled with them showing little evidence of proactive work against violent crime.

There were over 46k Bike Share rides in Toronto yesterday, more than the average ridership of the Queen streetcar. The cost to the city to operate that streetcar was over $50k/day in 2015. Bike share costs the city $8k/day. 6x as cost efficient. Smart cities invest in cycling.

The thing about Montreal’s summer “festivals” is that many of them last for weeks. Duration is a great strategy for relieving crowd pressure. Montreal also permits multiple closures to happen concurrently, creating more space. Put more time and more space together and overcrowding evaporates.

The Squamish people of what is now Vancouver were illegally dispossessed of their land 100 years ago. They sued, got the land back, and used their sovereignty to ignore local zoning and build 6,000 new homes over the loud objections of nearby wealthy NIMBYs. Now other tribes are getting in the game.
