i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.

I agree this is a moment when we all need to work together in getting the temperature down, but that doesn't mean excusing hate speech. Charlie Kirk did not support free and open debate. He supported engaging in bad faith as a monetization strategy and otherwise suppressing free speech.

i always wonder if folks who say this realize they're pushing the other side's narrative? "red states contain only people who voted that way/live those values, and anyone there harmed by their policies doesn't count bc they shouldn't live there" ...like. listen. you're singing the other side's song

It's not even a "people are instinctively good" thing. I wish that were true, but people are... everything. But I do think selling kindness is more frictionless than selling hatred. It's just less useful for the kinds of people who might have the money to wage either kind of propaganda campaign.

Just a reminder, if you have stuff on AO3 that you want to read or preserve, please make sure you download it. Also make sure you have your books, movies, tv-shows etc that might have sexual themes and also LGBTQIA+ topics saved. It might not be this bill, but it can be a future one.

Imo it would be FINE if Buttigieg said, "hey, some folks have fallen for anti-trans propaganda from the far right around sports, and we have an obligation to help them understand why that propaganda is hateful and false." But he didn't. He said we should "take them seriously." Absolutely not.

This is so beyond important to remember: the average person tends to view a legal verdict as Absolute Truth rather than what it really is, an awkwardly balanced morass that may or may not reflect reality. The absence of guilt legally is not innocence; a conviction is not always absence of innocence.
