On January 13, the Supreme Court is going to hear arguments over state laws targeting transgender girls in sports. This from
@pablo.show
and
@motherjones.com
is a great explainer on why the right-wing legal movement needs this issue to push trans people out of public life altogether

It's not enough that trans people are having our health care and rights denied to us. They won't be happy until we're denied even the most basic level of respect and dignity, too

On my way to the Supreme Court where I'll be proud to support 15-year-old Becky Pepper-Jackson, West Virginia's only transgender athlete, as she opposes the state's effort to ban her from playing as herself. Win or lose, Becky and her family are heroes for standing up for what's right

Becky Pepper-Jackson was 11 years old when she sued West Virginia over a law that barred transgender girls like her from joining girls’ sports teams. The Supreme Court will hear her case on Tuesday, and the outcome could affect laws in 27 states.

Something I'm convinced of (despite elite conventional wisdom swearing otherwise) is that this is still the same country that erupted into a "passion for democracy" in the summer of 2020, only to have their passion scolded and sworn off by all their elected leaders

While Becky Pepper-Jackson sounds like any teen navigating school assignments, friends and a demanding practice schedule, the transgender girl has also been carrying the weight of a national cultural and political battle.

It's hard to fathom how anyone looks at a teenager and decides it's okay to be this cruel. And then turn that cruelty into law. It doesn't really take much courage to let others live their lives.

ppl like to talk abt the Olympics and pro sports but in reality laws banning trans girls from playing women’s sports mostly impact children. Look at this girl. She’s a fucking baby and her state spent days, weeks, months crafting legislation specifically to bully her

The sheer number of videos of the shooting is horrific, but in the vein of what
@prisonculture.bsky.social
has been saying, it proves how many people cared enough to show up where ICE was and record them. It wasn't just one or two legal observers, and when Good was shot, they didn't abandon her.
