this is because Dolly Parton is the equal or better of most strung- instrument players you can name, a fact often obscured by the vocabulary of iconography sometimes used to discuss her work. thanks for coming to my presentation this’ll take about half a hour

When Japan's first private railway company, Nippon Tetsudo, opened Shinjuku Station in 1885, the samurai government was only 17 years in the rear view. The average daily passenger statistics showed only 50 people; on some days, it saw zero passengers.

As one terminally online person to another: some of you need to go learn how to bake a loaf of bread or pick up the hobby of reading the dictionary. Anything to stop posting USA news memes. This is not healthy, folks.

A caveat: The important thing is to steer the anger in the right direction. I've met several people who get angry and then start, say, getting addicted to the clout of dunking. That's not good anger. That's just being mean. Let your anger be the force that empowers you to do good.

A lot of people ask me how I learned to knit and tbh all we had in 2003 was this book and each other. If you can make it through the early noughties prose I think the instructions will still hold up fine.

Post a game you remember playing that other people obviously remember - don’t be stupid, these things run on an economy - but that is a bit niche and will make you feel special when most people don’t get it but some do and oh god you’re finally home, you don’t have to be alone anymore.

This help explains the otherwise confusing "too poor these days" narrative people whose preferences for being parents are around the margin. In the 1970s you could have a broadly normal life as a parent on a lower middle class income through the One Cool Trick of ignoring your kids completely. (1/2)
