The "online" Esther Ghey is railing against isn't even the constant transphobia of politicians and new outlets and media figures. It's that Brianna Ghey had any access to social media at all, it's about the mental health of a girl who was murdered instead of the hate she was subjected to.

Two teenagers were radicalized by the transphobic political climate into seeing a 15 year old girl as less than human. They killed the girl, and then the girl's grieving mother chose to embark on a moral panic crusade against "self-harm", acquitting the actual perpetrators of her daughter's demise.

At the risk of stating the obvious, this whole thing about "being on the phone too much" (and possibly even claims of self harm) is just a dogwhistle for "social media transed my child." Thus implicitly victim blaming her daughter for her own death by daring to transition.

We aren't even allowed epistomological validity when we're killed (as so many of us are) even by those who are supposed to love and care for us. We have the context of our passing stripped from us as a final insult and reframed into something convenient for political opportunists.

It doesn't even matter that political violence motivated by reactionary culture war bullshit killed their kid, they'll still be in denial about it, still using their status as a temporary celebrity to feed into (a different sort of) reactionary moral panic bullshit. I hate it so fucking much.

The phone did not shoot Brianna. Two reactionary teenagers who got radicalized thanks to reactionary culture war bullshit and the RW spheres of the internet did. If anything, "her phone" helped her find safe community and a much needed third space.

This reminds me so so much of when rumors about one of the kids who were shot at Columbine said they believed in god and that's why she died (this turned out to have not actually happened). Her parents capitalized on that and got a book deal.

I can't even begin to describe how much this pisses me off. This is the classic 1990s moral panic playbook by parents who are either political cowards or opportunists so they use the status of temporary celebrity to fuel a reactionary moral panic rather then what actually did happen.
