Right-wingers like Ben Shapiro and Rufo turned Crenshaw's scholarship into buzzwords and talking points, but the saliency and content of her work had long been subject to erosion prior to that circus starting up, and we can't exactly ignore why that happened. Look where it got us.

I think the article gets a few things wrong---it says that 'intersectionality' didn't become a hot-button right-wing buzzword, when there's a Vox article on that very topic that was published in May 2019. Overall, though, it highlights this absolute epistemic injustice Crenshaw experienced.

If there is such a thing as a third or fourth wave of feminism, Crenshaw is arguably as foundational a scholar of it as Butler. But the very same impulses that sought to strip the feminism from her scholarship---by no means limited to right-wing politics and propaganda---have brought us here.

Same thing happened in 2016. We just bake in expectations like "of course the Republican wins the south." The surprise is that he won the supposed firewall states of the midwest. But he still barely won those. His standard voter wasn't from the Michigan working class but from the Texas upper-middle.

What he created was not a mass-membership party but a combination of a professional campaign organization and a genuine movement, built up of thousands of self-organized "islands". This proved remarkably flexible and also allowed him to keep out fraudsters, adventurers and crazies.

Instead, he encouraged supporters to start semi-autonomous Tisza circles (islands) and organize locally.

This is a man who fundamentally did not see women as being people. 'Many girlfriends in Burma' where he was a police officer for the Raj. Accusations of rape in his past. Accusations which were ruinous to bring against a man as a woman at that time let alone a man who became as respected as he did

The claim isn't that social media is dead (yet). It's the assumptions that made it coherent as an object — human production, social circulation, public observability — can no longer be presupposed. We need new concepts and methods capable of studying what comes next.

So "social media" is fragmenting into three post-social formations: (a) Algorithmic broadcasting platforms — few-to-many flows from creators, brands, and bots, delivered as personalized feeds. Broadcasting, but individualized. Endpoint: the fully synthetic feed.

Third: a retreat from public posting. A ~50% drop in posting on Facebook and X between 2020 and 2024 (see my previous thread). Ordinary public participation is hollowing out, while sustained conversation moves to WhatsApp, Discord, Signal, Substack.

Platforms aren't just tolerating this — they're building it in. Meta launched AI Studio and piloted its own AI personas. X put Grok in the interface. If engagement is the metric, it doesn't matter whether a human or a model produced the content. Users have become optional.

We are no longer commenting or even liking. Just watching. Likes, shares, comments — "active" signals — are being displaced by watch time, dwell time, scroll hesitation. Preference is inferred from micro-reactions. The 'prod-user' has become the user-spectator.

Three dynamics are now dissolving it. First: the algorithmic shift. Platforms moved from social graphs to interest-based recommendation. You see what the model predicts will hold your attention, not what your network shared. TikTok set the template; everyone copied it. The social network is dead.

For two decades, "social media" meant a specific setup: users produced content, content circulated through social ties, platforms extracted value from mediating this. Networked publics, digital trace data, platformization — a generation of research rested on that configuration.
