This account likes to joke about cruise ships being outsized Petri dishes of pestilence, but this sounds genuinely horrific. Thoughts with everybody aboard, but especially with the crew - nobody signs on expecting the WHO to take a sudden interest in your wellbeing...

Although better to keep Ewa Woowar as the sole human actor, and have the rest as muppets. For sure, something extra horrific about the denouement being at a cliff top Wicker Muppet.

MUPPET WICKER MAN (Brian Henson, 1993) Police Sergeant Kermie travels to the isolated town of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. He finds the locals to be a surly and suspicious lot, rustic practitioners of crude bawdiness and Celtic neo-paganism. Starring Vincent Price as Lord Summerisle.

People may be aware of my long standing love for the running app ‘Zombies, Run!’, and I’m excited to see that (after a hiatus) they are now about to release new story content! The narrative is great (created and written by Naomi Alderman), and I’d love to know that more runners were enjoying it! 🧟🧟♀️🧟♂️

Margarine was mostly animal fat originally. Then the great depression led to the perfection of hydrogenation which made it possible to use whale oil. WW2 forced a shift to vegetable oil. The decimation of global whale populations meant there was no economic reason to shift back at that point.

It’s Shakespeare’s birthday. Used to show this to all my classes as one of the great examples of how to quickly & powerfully connect with your audience rhetorically under the guise of naturalism. Lewis is superb at building up his murderous contempt for the conspirators.

Yes, Swiss scientist Fritz Zwicky coined the term “dark matter” which is impressive, but he also coined the term “spherical bastard” to describe people who are bastards no matter which way you look at them, and I think that should be celebrated more.

Revealing that the Guardian apparently couldn't actually find any examples of the ruling having "changed lives" positively. Those quoted in support simply express political agreement with it rather than being able to point to any tangible life benefit, in contrast to those quoted in opposition.

Relatedly I think this is one of the most realistic things about Star Trek: 'in a post-scarcity society, some people choose to get involved in, basically, an organisation that is a bit the Scouts, a bit the peace corps and a bit a humanist version of the Royal Navy' seems about right.
