"We cannot forget them" Our Chair, Jennifer Buchan, led this year's University of Strathclyde Remembrance Service. Today, Armistice Day (11 Nov), is the anniversary of the official end of the First World War.

Today, on Remembrance Sunday, we honour all those who lost their lives in conflict — and reflect on our shared hope for peace. Across Scotland, Humanist Society Scotland members, supporters, and Celebrants are laying wreaths to remember those who died with compassion and gratitude.

Scotland is one of the few countries in the world where humanist marriages are legally recognised, thanks to years of campaigning by Humanist Society Scotland members. But a lack of regulation of their own marriage law by government agencies has allowed individuals to pose as “humanist” celebrants

Children should learn about all (major) religions and none in equal terms and not be pushed towards christianity. Also not via mild, kind and nice programs like the very popular Fishy music. School can do a few songs of them (and other christian songs) but it needs to be balanced not proselytizing.

Humanists believe strongly in reason. It guards against manipulation and prejudice and allows people to question claims and resist propaganda. This famous quote by Voltaire has been modernised; the original reads: "Whoever has the right or the capacity to make you absurd can render you unjust".

Did you know that Queen Amidala herself, Natalie Portman, doesn't believe in an afterlife? She consistently demonstrates humanist values through her activism, including supporting refugees through her work with organisations like the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

Right now in Scotland, young people are forced to take part in religious observance (worship), even if they don’t want to. Parents can in theory opt them out, but in reality? It’s inconsistent and unmonitored. Even Barbara Couper of the Catholic Education Service admits there’s no proper tracking.

Last weekend, around seven million Americans joined the nationwide “No Kings” protests, calling out Trump. Why does this matter for Scotland? 🚨 Scotland isn’t immune 🚨 We’ve been warning about the increase in right-wing, flag-waving protests across much of the UK — often echoing US-style Christian nationalism. Some ask, “What’s that got to do with Scotland?” Sadly, quite a lot.

At a recent Holyrood committee hearing, Church of Scotland representative Rev. Stephen Miller claimed that religious observance is NOT worship. When asked to clarify what RO is if not worship, he struggled to answer — instead claiming RO is part of the Curriculum for Excellence.

We were saddened to hear about the death of American trans elder Miss Major Griffin-Gracy. She died yesterday at home, aged 78. A veteran of Stonewall and a tireless advocate for trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated, she was a powerful voice for equality and justice.
