What? No. Religion in schools should be taught about from an objective and broad view, giving children the chance to think for themselves about what they believe. Let their actions be a call to action for us. We unequivocally stand with all those targeted by this hatred. This weekend's events are not a cause for despair, but a reminder of why building a society guided by humanist values is more critical than ever.

They attack humanism because it represents a worldview based on reason, compassion, and a shared humanity that transcends nationality, ethnicity, or belief. They view our commitment to universal human rights not as a strength, but as a direct threat to their narrow, exclusionary ideology.

A truly telling moment was when extremists tore up a 'Secular Humanism' flag. For decades, the Christian right in the US has used 'secular humanism' as a scapegoat for everything they oppose: liberal social values, LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, & the freedoms of thought, expression, & choice.

Our first priority is to stand in solidarity with the racial and religious minorities who were the primary targets of this hatred but our wider mission must be to fight even harder for our values for all of society.

Very worrying for all supporters of a tolerant society to see the London rally this weekend. Besides the the many violent incidents recorded, there were so many blatantly racist signs and Christian nationalist slogans in the crowds. 🧵

The extreme right identifying their enemy as 'humanism' or 'secular humanism' is a tactic which (in the United States) goes back decades. This image from Christian author Tim LaHaye is a great example. It repurposes antisemitic imagery to portray humanists as driving all liberal changes in society.
