A true icon. John was Britain’s – and perhaps the world’s – first openly gay high-profile athlete. He came out during the 1976 World Championships in Gothenburg, which he went on to win. John left a lasting impact on our community and countless others. Today, we remember him.

Alan Turing, one of Britain’s most renowned humanists, was a visionary whose genius helped the Allies win WWII. Yet despite his extraordinary contributions, he was subjected to chemical castration by the British state in 1952. This #PrideMonth, we remember him. He was born #OnThisDay 1912.

Growing up gay means being surrounded by heteronormative ideas from every direction. We’re taught from the earliest age that boys marry girls, that love looks a certain way, that families follow a single pattern. And yet, despite all of that, we still come out gay.

In 1976, religious conservative Mary Whitehouse launched a blasphemy case against Gay News. It was the last successful blasphemy trial in the UK. She blamed an 'intellectual, homosexual, and humanist lobby' for the backlash. There was no lobby – but we liked the idea. And LGBT Humanists was born.
