I went down a rabbit hole of looking up ex colleagues and friends and estranged family and ex boyfriends, and a mentor asked: “what are you feeling in the moment before you do that?” My answer wasn’t curiosity or envy or anger or care or any other feeling I’d expected. It was, quite simply, boredom.

Whenever you read anything about workplace culture- like kindness, compassion, relationships, listening, inclusion... is there ever anything new? We KNOW about all these things. We don't need more & more information- what we need are conditions which support the ongoing PRACTICE of these things.

I think part of the problem is assuming that our own care, and that of the people with whom we share a society, benefit from this style of corporate management

note to self: sometimes, rest is the most radical act of resistance. revolution flows more freely when we take the time to pause, recenter, and reset. the system feeds on our frenzied, frantic reactivity. starve it.

reminder:

Shy types can come across as aloof, or even rude. Suspend your judgement until you take the time to get to know them a little better. Some of my favourite people were aloof and rude to begin with.

Spring sprung

This has nothing to do with the horrors but I will say one of the best decisions we made as a film family this year was to institute Friday Family Movie Night. We rotate turns picking the movie, everyone gets one veto a month so you have to have a backup, and selection and veto must be in good faith

I'm creating an OpenHouseNY shortlist for out-of-town guests, and I think it's 🤗 — and, I'll admit, touching — that you can see where the Dept of Transport makes its signs, or visit the Dept of Sanitation's waste transfer station + compost facility, or watch new garbage trucks demo big-bin pickup...
