I went to the American embassy today to get a passport card that I could carry in my wallet to show my citizenship in case masked men try to kidnap me when I’m in the US. Seriously.

This entire situation is beyond fucked up. This is why they won’t take their own paper work, like Real ID, which requires multiple documents as proof to get. They want to be able to challenge citizenship through individual means, which is harder to prove.

They can deport anyone they want for 'failing to prove citizenship.' I'm a big pale blonde white guy, they could deport me because my license isn't a "Real ID". That's where we're at. If we get past this DHS needs to be cut off at the root & everyone in it barred from law enforcement for life.

I think this is a really important point. When folks say "no AI" they often don’t mean "I can conceive of no possible use for AI"—they mean "the use cases I’ve been shown do not begin to justify the harms"—that’s not something you respond to by offering another narrow use case

This thread has gone on too long but essentially—if all the power sits on one side of a "debate" it’s not a debate—& so protest is a reasonable response—if you are someone who genuinely wants scholarly discourse in such an environment, what on-ramps are you building for that discourse to happen?

we should be having more nuanced discussions yes—but what is a platform for those discussions where meaningful change or compromise might result? It isn’t bluesky—this is just chatter. Let’s say someone agrees outright refusal is doomed—what is the alternative engagement that would be productive?+

It’s especially galling when calls for less strident discourse come from people in the industry steamrolling all of culture—it can’t help but echo the political dynamic of folks in power—literally passing laws to enforce that power—claiming to be victims because those without power critique them+

But it is neither surprising nor unreasonable that the dominant academic response right now is anger—we weren’t consulted about massive decisions that completely upended how we teach & now how we research & publish—& those upheavals were even celebrated as a comeuppance against uppity intellectuals+

I’ve recently described myself as a "Luddite humanist" but that doesn’t mean I’m in the outright refusal camp with machine learning—there are important applications of machine learning to historical materials that we’ve used in my projects—but I’m glad the refusers are here staking their positions+

I know that's easy for me to say as an outsider and a tenured full professor. And maybe the problem is that there's no possible unified response among the faculty--I suspect there are some who celebrate this outcome and then rationalize it by arguing about grading policies.

So, what are the faculty and grad student groups at OU doing to protest this assault on their autonomy? It's an attack on all of them. We all know stories (at least secondhand) about grades getting changed, but losing a position because mgmt doesn't like the grade you issued? No.

Higher ed is not compulsory and within most universities students have immense discretion over what courses to take. But if you sign up for a course, you are obligating yourself to learn certain things. Otherwise, what are we even doing here?

It’s similar to the distinction between academic freedom and free speech. Academic freedom is a context of *disciplined* speech where academics are free to pursue research and teach with a degree of collective autonomy. We as communities decide what counts - and can allocate jobs & etc accordingly.

1. This is terrible. 2. This is such a BS claim from a university: “We are committed to teaching students how to think, not what to think.” No! We do, in fact, commit to teaching you what to think. You sign up for a psych course, you have to learn psychology. You can ignore it later if you choose.

Where we send you if we catch you inferring future events on the basis of resemblance to past occurrences. Or, at least, where we've sent people so far.

As someone trying to learn more I would be furious if I signed up for what I thought was guidance on being a more inclusive provider and got transphobia instead.

One thing I've noticed in discussion about this incident (mostly on Reddit) is the idea that no one should get a 0. A lot of people seem to be at institutions that don't give 0s. As long as something is turned in, 'an effort was made,' some points are given. I saw this expectation in my time, too.
