I was writing more on this, but it was getting too long and the upshot is even though the "RCP 8.5 is implausible" take is probably correct it only influences the least important of the several purposes of the RCPs. For everything else (benchmarking, impacts, etc.), it's a critical scenario.

I don’t really pay attention to charges of doomerism. I don’t know what it means offline. I do know that refusing a version of how the future will unfold forecloses on the power that actually shapes that future. That’s not disavowing that tech changes are happening but they are in now a given.

that RCP8.5 can be implausible as an emissions trajectory but crucial for modeling impacts is legitimately confusing and people are right to be confused but if your job is climate change knower you should know this!

Even if we don't think 8.5 is plausible, given how important downscaling uncertainty and internal variability can be for local and decadal-scale projections, depending on the hazard a large ensemble from RCP 8.5 might be best for planning. I don't think there's an ideal general recommendation!
