was thinking about this just this morning when trying to navigate a many-decade analysis of my favorite basin. even using a full-period average to compute anomalies makes longer-ago La Niña events look **cold** compared with more recent ones. it's like something is changing.

This is exactly it. There are beneficial AI tools that nobody is mad about (tools that help with accessibility, medical use, etc.) It's the generative AI slop we're being inundated with and the insistence on injecting it into every area of our lives with no real benefit that people rightly hate.

It's hard to understate how extremely difficult it is to tell if an LLM is analyzing data you feed it, or just predicting a likely response based on its training data. I've had so many problems with analysts doing this and not realizing the LLM just guessed the answer.

A good cautionary tale for when someone claims that trusting data analysis done with an LLM is good because it’s “objective.” In this example, Copilot apparently decided to ignore the data it was given and just run with all the subconscious biases its (human-made) training data inevitably gave it.

I'm slowly losing what's left of my mind because I'll load a remote OISST netCDF file via THREDDS and get arrays filled with zeros. Real values exist. I can plot them. But once I use load() on the xarray Dataset (to subsequently save data of interest), the resulting array is zeroed out. 🤷

US hail risk continues to evolve. Consistent with academic research, we're not seeing an overall increase in the number of days with hail. However... We are seeing an increase in the number of large hail occurrences per daily outbreak. This increase aligns with the trajectory of annual loss costs.
