So here is a legal/technical question: Who “owns” NCAR? Isn’t NCAR operated by UCAR, which is a university consortium? How does the govt have authority to restructure NCAR? They can defund it, sure, but how could they restructure it?

Assume N cubes of equal volume. What is the arrangement that minimizes the average distance between any 2 cubes? I feel like it should be a sphere (or a big cube)? What is the arrangement that maximizes that distance? Probably a straight line? This is a skeet about convention centers.

Dear senior profs who have written tenure letters. Can you help demystify the process for some junior profs up for tenure soon? What do you look for? How do you make your evaluation? We are told that the letters are the most important part of the file, but not what letter writers look for. 1/

In Earth Science (or at least in cimate/atmos/ocean) there is no particular significance to last author. The senior author (PI) is often second author, but just as often will be in the middle of the list.

Chemistry is really not my strong point, but, generally speaking, if you have a source of particles how can they neither accumulate nor interact (i.e. be inert)?

Like, I get it how evolution and natural selection worked to select for humans whose brains cannot just tune out their kids’ screaming. All i’m saying is that once you introduce the interstate highway system you run the risk of starting to naturally select in the other direction.
