Every time data centers are brought up, I'm reminded of a recent meeting I had with a person working in that sector who mentioned how important power demand modeling was, because they projected if the grid were to go down in Phoenix during peak summer, 30,000 people would die in the first 24 hours

Burning fossil fuels has made this heatwave hotter. True for the UK today, and everywhere else, all of the time.

A Scottish wildfire in 2025 released ~38,000 tonnes of carbon, burning so intensely that ~85% of emissions came from ancient peat soils, not vegetation. That carbon took centuries to accumulate. It was released in 4 days. This is what climate regime shift looks like. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Ok I had a quick look at this paper. I think it’s useful in thinking about where we are in the AI revolution in both weather and climate. The overall thrust of the paper is useful - AI weather prediction (AIWP) models are very useful, but currently don’t extrapolate well to record-breaking extremes.

Prediction: not for long. But a useful paper.
