I have a rough draft in my e-mails, asking the city if they could use empty stores - there are a lot of them - as temporary cooling centers during heatwaves. Most of these stores have AC, unlike houses and apartments.

I believe these numbers are still too low. Today the local page for Oberhausen the newspaper reported that 88 people died between June 22 and 29. Almost as much in as in the neighboring city Essen. That is the low number. I'm not surprised, as there is too much concrete in Oberhausen.

I was wondering about that -- I suspect he and his team have gone through the recommendations from previous disasters. The mobile cooling van is brilliant! BC report on the 2021 heat dome (most fatalities were people indoors without AC). Mamdani specifically warned not to sleep in a sweltering room)

Especially when those deaths were people invisible to capital and to tourism -- the elderly, who tend to be poor, and probably are not living in the tourist zones. So invisible in death as they largely were in life.

Adding -- heat waves ARE violent natural disasters, killing plants growing, future crops, and the animals we rely on for food. They can cause permanent damage to furtile land increasing both plant fragility and pests. New dust bowls coming as well as increasing desert areas.

Brilliant as usual by @armscontrolwonk.bsky.social on the context behind China's submarine-launched ballistic missile test into the Pacific. "These sorts of tests are routine for the US and other nuclear powers, but China has tended to do them rarely -- just once for each major strategic system."

If China wants to conduct a realistic flight test to a strategic missile's full range on a representative trajectory, it needs to do what the U.S. does -- test out in the open ocean. This is what 7,000 km (JL-2) and 10,000 km (JL-3) trajectories look like.

A few thoughts on China's SLBM test. This isn't as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be. Nuclear weapons states have missiles and they test them.
