August 2025 was the third warmest August on record after 2023 and 2024 at approximately 1.3C above preindustrial levels. This continues a string of recent months a bit cooler than the exceptional 2023/2024 temperatures but warmer than any prior years.

Considering that two historic storms capable of overtopping the levee system have already hit the city, and climate change makes the strongest hurricanes stronger and raises sea levels, it’s a matter of time before New Orleans sees the “Big One” that will overtop the city’s levees. What then?

One of these was a Category 4 at landfall, had a storm surge of 14 feet, caused about 100 deaths and $84 billion (2024 USD) in damage. The other was a Category 3 at landfall, had a 28 foot storm surge, caused nearly 1400 deaths and over $200 billion (2024 USD). Can you spot the difference?
