"The Trump administration's intent is clear: They want to undermine or overturn the endangerment finding so as to evade EPA's legal responsibility to address the harms caused by climate change," said UCS's Rachel Cleetus. "This is simply a giveaway to the fossil fuel industry..."

BREAKING: Scientists are staging a “science fair” in the lobby of a Congressional building to tell elected officials about the critical knowledge the US will lose because their research grants have been canceled.

The Secretary of Commerce's new policy requiring his personal review of all NOAA contracts over $100,000 is directly harming American science. 🧪 How do I know? Because this morning, twelve of America's rising leaders in climate science (including myself) were furloughed.

Another informative and fact-based piece: "I am absolutely heartbroken by this tragedy, and I am downright appalled by the amount of blatant misinformation... It is also clear that many people are allowing their desire to score political points to color their insights and opinions on this tragedy."

I've been working on a story about the impacts of the Trump administration on the science sector here, which meant following US budget proposals like this one for @noaa.gov - it's a litany of terminations and cuts. E.g. a third less to protect turtles and whales, but more for fisheries 🧵

Silencing science.

The science communication team at Climate.gov just made their *final* social media post after the entire content production staff was fired last month. The suppression of science and science education is very real and can't be allowed to continue: wclivestream.com/act/

I sought comment from NOAA and the Department of Defense on this and received this reply today from NOAA's spokesperson. They suggest we use the surviving ATMS microwave that degrades significantly at the edges. You can see how much worse off we'd be with Erick last week if we only had ATMS.

A huge blow was dealt to hurricane forecasters this week as a critical tool was abruptly terminated by the Department of Defense and NOAA. The immediate discontinuation of data from three weather satellites will severely impact hurricane forecasts this season and beyond. More ⬇️

“It will stop all progress” in U.S. forecasting, said James Franklin, who retired in 2017 as chief of the NHC hurricane specialists. Abolishing that research will be “a generational loss" of any progress that would have been made over the next 10 years or more."
