Our new paper shows how recent prescribed (Rx) burns in the western US impacted later wildfires. We find that Rx fires reduced wildfire severity + net smoke emissions, even when factoring in smoke from Rx fires. But, we find that these Rx fires were less effective in the wildland-urban interface.

It is difficult to describe just how disastrous it would be if just-released NOAA budget proposal (or even large portions) were to be enacted: It would involve a wholesale dismantling (decimation, really) of entities relevant to weather, climate, & ocean research & prediction.

The US Global Change Research Program's website, including all its sub-domains that host the National Climate Assessments and related reports, is now offline. The 1990 Global Change Research Act (see below) mandates its research findings be available to all federal agencies & departments.

Attended a panel event put on by our AAUP today about authoritarianism and universities. The panelists had expertise on past and present authoritarian regimes from around the world. Big takeaway from all of them: universities capitulating to early requests didn't save them from further crackdowns.
