This is an interesting, if provocative perspective. I agree with most of what the authors say except I view the paradigm they advocate as more of a “yes and” rather than a replacement for our current understanding. 1/

3/ We analyzed 18 major Antarctic ice drainage basins using the ice-sheet model #PISM, gradually increasing global mean temperature to map their long-term response. Result: different regions respond very differently to warming.

In general, I think scientists should spend more (any?) time thinking about **why** they do their science, as it would cause them to think more critically about the means **by which** they do it.

His premise is that if astronomy is more and more data science (it is) and if current AI are getting to human-equivalent level at data science (maybe, depends on who you ask), we gotta first discuss WHY people study the stars to then have a good conversation about what to do.

Grad student Tanner May has a new fun paper out in the Journal of Glaciology that is kind of magical. The magic trick that Tanner performs is that he manages to estimate thickness of glaciers using only surface elevations and nothing else. This shouldn't work, but it does. Let me tell you why.
