The @agu.org Chapman Conference on Updating Usable Projections of Future Sea Level in Montreal last week was a great meeting! I was glad to be able to attend, share a talk on my work looking at the evolution of global sea level projections, and hear from so many other talented experts in the field.

Had a great week at the International Summer School organized in Venice last week! It was the perfect place for discussions on coastal climate change. I delivered a keynote lecture focused on my work with sea level projections, and had great conversations with the other participants.

Cuts to federal science funding means we’ll be more vulnerable to hurricanes and nor’easters here in the Mid-Atlantic.

If allowed to go through, this will be catastrophic for science in the U.S., and by extension, the global community, given the vital role that the U.S. has played in the scientific community for decades.

My resignation letter

This past week, I was in Washington, D.C., where I had the opportunity to join colleagues from @agu.org for visits to our legislative offices. Together, we advocated for continued support of Earth and space science. It was a busy week, but very energizing!

For only the second time in recorded history, an Atlantic season has produced three Category 5 hurricanes... the previous year was 2005. This puts 2025 in an elite class of hurricane seasons. It also means that nearly 7% of all known Category 5 hurricanes have occurred just in this year. #Melissa

Changes we expect to hurricanes in a warmer climate include more rapid strengthening, slower forward movement, and more torrential rainfall--all characteristics that describe the incredibly dangerous #Melissa. If you know anyone in Jamaica, please make sure they get to safety.
