Really great to see this work on how good heat pump installs can be. An average seasonal performance factor (sCOP) of 3.9 beats gas on running costs, even in the UK where the price ratio between gas and electricity is so bad.

It's been great to be part of this project with @janrosenow.bsky.social @trystanlea.bsky.social to share the results from HeatpumpMonitor.org @openenergymon.bsky.social in a peer-reviewed paper 🥳 The overall highlighted HP performance is testament to the work of excellent installers 👏 🎉

To be clear, this means better designed heat pump systems can operate in the real world at an average of around *386% efficiency*, versus roughly 80-90% for a gas boiler, making heat pumps more than £200 a year cheaper to run for the average household.

This research on modern household heat pump performance finds an average SCOP of 3.86, 40% better than older studies. Our heat pump has achieved a SCOP of 3.85 so far this year.

Using old coal mines to heat homes? Gateshead is doing it. Their mine-water project—the UK’s largest—draws 15°C water from boreholes, uses heat pumps to boost it to 80°C, and sends that heat through an underground network. The system now warms 350+ homes and 23 buildings.

No surprise: new analysis shows that heat pumps can deliver excellent performance even in older buildings with no meaningful correlation between building age & heat pump efficiency. This is in line with my own experience of having a heat pump in a 1880 Victorian home with only modest insulation.

Those tree hugging hippies in Hungary now lead the world in the share of electricity generated from solar with almost 25% of their electricity coming from solar in 2024. A remarkable leap from just 7% five years ago.

In Germany the only source of electricity that keeps growing and growing: renewable energy. Solar and wind keep expanding and even though nuclear is no more coal generation has already shrunk significantly and keeps falling.

The hydrogen bubble has burst. Nearly 60 major low-carbon H₂ projects have been cancelled or paused — far more capacity than the world has actually built. The reason? Fundamentals still don’t add up: • Demand isn’t there • Costs remain high • Infrastructure is missing www.ft.com/content/b098...

EVs beat petrol cars on lifetime emissions — even on “dirty” grids. Battery production is carbon-intensive, but EVs quickly repay that debt and end up 21–71% cleaner over 250,000 km. We can’t wait for perfect grids: electrify transport and clean the grid now.

Grid bottlenecks aren’t a failure of the energy transition — they’re proof it’s working. Renewables got cheap fast, and now the grid has to catch up. Time to build the wires for the clean energy system we already have.
