What does it mean, if the national equality body aggressively pursues discrimination; if the energy regulator rubber-stamps huge price hikes; if the water authority does nothing about shit in the rivers and the press regulator occasionally ticks off a newspaper? What is the purpose of “regulation”.

Was interesting to see Sara Jacobs repeatedly ask the State Department officials earlier today in a committee hearing why the US does not bear pressure onto the UAE to curb funds and arms to the RSF and the official literally dances around saying the name UAE at all.

i mean if this doesn’t sum up what we also did to the Kurds, and so many other “allies” in the entire history of America Or like how Seattle is named for a local Indian chief who was nice to the settlers and the literal 5th law the settlers in Seattle passed was an order to expel all Indians.

The CPI-U went up 9% in the year to June 2022; that was not "moderate". And inflation has not "subsided" in the sense of returning to normal. In the last year of CPI-U data, it has gone up 3%, above pre-pandemic rates and notably above target. Inflation's been abnormally high for 5 years now!

Note that Stancil's observation here is equivalent to observing that a consumption basket that cost $20,000 in 2021 cost $21,600 in 2022. On average, no, probably not "devastating" (though not nothing). But for people who were just barely in the black, or had more inflation-vulnerable consumption?

Although many studies evaluate traffic cameras, very few apply causal inference methods. Some scholars who implement stronger designs argue that they eliminate the observed safety benefits of cameras. Yet we find substantial effects using the Callaway and Sant’Anna diff-in-diff estimator.

Germany has been positioning itself for years now as the last great bastion of the postwar liberal international order, now that the United States has abandoned those commitments. And yet again, we see there is no contradiction between liberal internationalism and genocide.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

And the forced sterilizations (begun 1933) took place in a distinct program to Aktion T4 (begun 1939), so the latter's 300k body count is presumably exclusive of the 6k effectively murdered through botched sterilizations.

Debates about halting growth in rich-country GDP per capita make me think of Japan, the GDP per capita of which has hovered around $40k in directly-currently-translated USD since 1992ish. Indeed Japan's GDP per capita in current dollars is back where it was in '98 (Asian financial crisis).
