Another theory we're investigating is that heat pumps are inhabited by invisible leprechauns. Every day they spread out across your garden in search of heat and stuff this inside your house through their metal lair. You pay them with electricity. The less heat outside, the more you have to pay them.

Two things that stand out when looking at battery installation in Europe. 1) We somehow installed less capacity in 2025 than in 2024. 2) A higher proportion of installations in Europe are behind the meter compared to the rest of the world. Cc @bayartpierre.bsky.social any ideas why?

I've said it before: government has to find a way to explain this, or least get the message out there that futures is decoupling from physical costs because futures will go down on Trump's latest wheeze, but the physical situation *will not change* and consumers will not see any relief.

It's interesting to watch covid-level shocks to the energy system be ignored by the broader markets. It would seem charts like this might be giving more people second thoughts.

Finally. This week Von Der Leyen said "electrifying Europe means making Europe more independent" in her response to the Oil price crisis. Compare that to the response to the Gas price crisis 2022/2023 when VDL announced the creation of a hydrogen bank..

Without energy efficiency, the EU would need — and pay — 31% more for energy today. Since 2000, efficiency has removed 265 Mtoe of demand from the market entirely. The best protection against a price shock is not finding cheaper oil and gas. It's needing less of it.
