In the HUXt model, there are two CMEs forecasted to impact Earth sometime between October 6-8. Exact impact time is not worth mentioning since the CMEs are hard to track and may accelerate, interact with one another or other solar wind structures, etc. Let’s watch this.

Here is the streamer blowout CME that may impact Earth in a few days (high uncertainty of arrival time). It is a slow yet dense eruption. The data here comes from Stereo-A's Heliospheric Imager which looks at the Sun from the side. Earth is to the left in these images.

The Sun's farside is getting busy! Here are recent helioseismic images with annotations from SolarHam. The gray-boxed areas are regions of likely new AR development. Yellow boxes represent old ARs that are surviving on the Sun's farside.

There are a few CMEs heading towards Earth right now, mostly without flare signatures. The M1.5 CME that looked very promising is included here along with a streamer blowout eruption and other halo CME. This "CME smoothie" may impact Earth around Oct 7-8 according to models. #heliophysics

HUXt gives the M1.5 CME about a 78% chance of impacting Earth around October 7, but the uncertainty is very high. With the full moon impeding views, I’m not getting too hyped about this forecasted weak impact, but it’s still worth noting. About HUXt: go.theauroraguy.com/huxtmodel

Auroral visibility may be limited tonight to U.S.-Canada border states perhaps dipping briefly to places a bit further south during substorms. The moon is also bleaching the skies and making any faint displays hard to see. There is not much visible, yet in Maine.

Oof well the M1.5 CME ended up not looking too impressive in LASCO C2/C3, and NASA M2M is forecasting a glancing blow around 10-6 11 UT as of now. Nothing crazy. This is why it’s good to hold the celebrations until after we see what the experts have to say…

The M1.5 CME is seen leaving the Sun in STEREO-A's coronagraph (COR2). It is only visible for a few frames so far. Earth is to the left. The CME is a bit biased northward, but I think there is an Earth-directed component. Let's see what models have to say about this one.

An Earth-directed CME is likely on the way! We still need to confirm a few things, but here is my initial thought process and a current rundown of what we’re seeing in the imagery… really would like to see coronagraph data before getting too hyped about this…

Wow! This base-difference movie shows a large dimming near center disk and a clear wave propagating in all directions. I am fairly confident there is a CME heading to Earth right now, but we will need to confirm this with coronagraph imagery and evaluate models for timing. #heliophysics

The NOAA-20 satellite snapped this image of the aurora at 2:52 am CDT on October 2 which extended close to the U.S.-Canada border. I love these low-flying satellite views of the auroral oval... it really puts things into perspective!

Moonlight is washing this out quite a bit, but there are nice, tall red pillars visible on cam in Ely, MN. A substorm is happening. A red glow to the north may be visible from Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. ... worth taking a look. go.theauroraguy.com/webcams

Woohoo! We are back at G3 STRONG geomagnetic storming tonight as a result of this ongoing coronal hole! This has been a very prolific week of auroral activity and geomagnetic storming due to lots of different space weather phenomena.

The growth-phase arc is still expanding south now as you can see in the Ely, MN cam. A substorm is still likely tonight as energy continues to build. GOES West values are as low as earlier in the night. Stay tuned! go.theauroraguy.com/webcams

G3 warning just posted by NOAA SWPC due to ongoing enhanced conditions (wind speed ~700 km/s and ~10 nT with mostly negative Bz). More substorms are possible tonight with extended auroral visibility to the central U.S. Stay tuned!

Seeing some great pictures of aurora from Ohio, Indiana, Idaho, Utah, Vermont, and other places around the northern tier and central U.S. tonight! The night is still not over even after this substorm happening currently. More is almost surely yet to come, and we will see more substorms.

Whenever you see auroral beads like these, a substorm is about to occur. You typically have 1-2 minutes before things really start to get going, so auroral beads are a "OH SH*T" kind of aurora that you should learn to recognize.

Massive pillars are visible in Minnesota now perhaps from states as far south as Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, Indiana, etc. get out and look north if you can! Use a smartphone to detect faint pillars/red glow. go.theauroraguy.com/webcams

120 GW of auroral power is currently modeled to be simmering inside the northern auroral oval. We just saw a nice show across the northern tier of the U.S. with more to come tonight as Bz stays directed southward and wind speeds are ~800 km/s. Stay tuned!

Chattery active regions tonight! AR 4235 of all regions decided to pop off a little C5.24 flare just now after the small limb-shot M1.2. Both events were non-eruptive. There is some field-line movement from the limb flare.

Taking a live look at the skies in Ely, MN, the auroral arcs are moving south and the oval is expanding due to the south Bz and substorm growth phase. Not sure *when* we will see a substorm, but will come eventually... go.theauroraguy.com/webcams
