Merry Christmas! Thankfully no tornadoes overnight, but it was still a busy night. Widespread 40 to 60 mph gusts and heavy rain caused a lot of roadway flooding and downed trees. Santa Cruz harbor even registered a 91 mph gust! We aren’t done yet. More showers and storms later this afternoon.

Bay Area residents awoke to blue skies Wednesday after a stormy night, but the weather service said another round of rain and wind is inbound tonight “If you slept through it, congratulations, you sleep better than most people ... We’re gonna be dealing with that again tonight. So, be prepared.”

Tonight is about as good as it gets for Bay Area coastal tornado chances: Triple point, solid shear and fast storm motions. The triple point is the point is a key boundary between air masses (where the cold, warm and occluded fronts meet) and is a favored location for tornado development.

The first stage of extratropical cyclogenesis, wave stage, has begun in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The potential bomb cyclone is forecast to track north-northeast and bring strong winds to the Northern California coastline. Its trajectory will have big impacts on wind speeds & associated damage.

Heavy rainfall rates will "pose a significant threat of flash flooding, landslides, rock falls and mud slides," WPC wrote.
