There were no fans in the stands when the Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers. Fans were moved undercover for safety due to imminent lightning. Yet, MLB let play continue as a thunderstorm roared across Detroit. That was until a bolt lit up the sky in the middle of an inning. Yikes.

Using the threshold from my “One Strike, You’re Out” paper, lightning was occurring within 8 miles of Comerica Park 7:29 - 8:22 pm. According to my ESPN app, the game wasn’t delayed until around 8:16 pm. 47 minutes with lightning at an unsafe distance before a delay! Insanity!

Elevated convection — thunderstorms originating high in the atmosphere, not from air parcels near the ground — are possible in parts of Northern and Central California before dawn Sunday and continuing through the day. Stronger surface-based storms are forecast in the Sierra in the afternoon. #CAwx

Northern California is lit up in red on this summer’s wildfire outlook. That indicates above-normal potential for significant fire behavior. A record warm winter and slim snowpack is setting the stage for elevated fire activity, though there are a few wild cards in play this summer.

@nws.noaa.gov is highlighting the northeast Pacific for a chance of an early-season tropical cyclone. A mid-May tropical cyclone would not be unprecedented, but the first named storm in the NE Pacific is typically not until June 10. Record ocean heat is raising odds for an early storm.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in parts of Northern California on Sunday as a low-pressure system becomes negatively tilted. (Read more: www.noaa.gov/jetstream/up...). Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and hail (potentially 1 in. or larger) are the main threats.

March was warmer than April in California for the first time since 2015. That's despite April temperatures being near normal across most of the state. Prior to 2026, the only other years this had occurred were 2015, 2003, 2001, 1978, 1972, 1967, 1900 and 1896.

The last 6 months, Nov-Apr, represent the driest Nov-Apr period since 1980-81 for the Contiguous U.S. and the 7th driest since 1895-96. There are large areas that experienced the driest Nov-Apr on record (red colors). Much of the Great Lakes region had their wettest Nov-Apr on record. 🌵

The Nov-Apr 2025-26 was the warmest Nov-Apr on record (since 1895-96). A very large portion of the western U.S. had their single warmest Nov-Apr compared to all other Nov-Apr periods. 🔥🔥🔥

The National Interagency Fire Center has released its summer outlook. Elevated wildfire potential is projected across a broad swath of the West, with the highest risk generally shifting from the Four Corners Region in May and June to the Northwest, Rockies and Northern California by July and August.

April lightning record in NorCal, per NIFC. A consequence of elevated SSTs: "A little over 10,300 lightning strikes were observed using the Vaisala detection system. The 2000-2025 Vaisala average is a little over 1,500, and the previous April monthly record was a little over 8,600 recorded in 2016."
