How clear has it been in Anchorage this month? I used the Lake Hood (PALH) station since it is not augmented. For the Dec 1-21 period, they have report 'clear' (CLR) skies 76% of the time. The median value for Dec 1-21 during the ASOS era (since 1997) is 16% of the time. @alaskawx.bsky.social

Sea ice extent in the Bering as been basically flat the past week and is now decidedly below the 1991-2020 median. Storminess early this week will likely result in some retreat of the ice edge but then a shift to north winds later in the week would allow for some expansion. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce

We caroled at the Fairbanks solstice festival downtown this afternoon. We sang some outside, then some inside, then some outside…(I’m in the long green coat) Folks were liked up to ride around in a dog sled. It was about -25F Dogs are not quite in tune!

Made it out to the office at the Annette Island Airport, where I had 3.9 inches of snow on the board. This puts my December total thus far at 10.2 inches, which is above the 1991 - 2020* climate normals for PANT of 8.1 inches for December (*Note: Snow records stopped being recorded in 2017).

I’ve been flying in and out of Fairbanks for 36 years and have never been on an inbound flight and then had to sit on tarmac for a gate to open up. Until today. 😐
