On this date, in 1854, the "Great Carolina Hurricane". Probably a low end category 3 in Georgia (category 2 in SC), but from my perspective -- much more distinctive in very slow moving and very large size, with a lot of rain. This, at St. Simon's Island, GA, about 40 miles south from the center.

125 years ago today: the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900... 4th deadliest natural disaster in US history. A major hurricane landfall in TX that was well-forecast by the Cubans, and ignored by the US Weather Bureau. Not a shining moment in international relations, and with terrible consequences.

I moved to Asheville in 2010. I have no baseline of 2004 / 1940 / 1916. Big communication challenge here I think.

This is a really nice piece by Scientific American's Andrea Thompson on the progress we've made improving hurricane forecasting. It's hard to understand why something that's had bipartisan support for decades, and is demonstratively cost-effective, is about to be thrown under the bus.

Why do we care about continued investment in our weather radar infrastructure? Without a reliable, modernized radar network, we lose valuable time in seeing tornadoes *before* they threaten places and people. The below percentages indicate that radar prompts 9 out of 10 warnings!

Cancelling the next PAR R&D phase is nonsensical. PAR technology is our best candidate to replace our aging fleet of WSR-88Ds. Weather radar is one of the most lifesaving and highest-ROI technologies our gov’t has ever supported. Scrapping next gen radar is pound-foolish w/o the penny-wise part.
