This is not just "NCAR boosterism," folks. There are multiple empirical measures by which this is correct--and also, if you took a random sampling of atmospheric & Earth scientists from around the world, I'd bet that a substantial majority of them would agree. NCAR is truly irreplaceable.

When you ask weather/climate people to name places that act as a hub of lifesaving research and innovation, Boulder CO would rise to top 2-3. NCAR Mesa Lab is the heartbeat of activities there. Can’t believe this is even on the table, let alone being lobbed out there like it’s already a certainty.

In an internal email to NSF NCAR employees, UCAR President Antonio (Tony) Busalacchi told staff: “This story is the first we have heard of any plan to target NSF NCAR, and we have already reached out to NSF to get more information.” UCAR released a media statement regarding the USA Today report:

Air and road travel are safer, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and wildfires are better predicted, students, early career scientists, and teachers are trained, and the public learns more about STEM because of NCAR. We’ve spent decades preaching STEM and we’re destroying it all in less than a year.

I wonder if the goal was to sell off the leases/properties to real estate developers. Mesa Lab sure would be a prize for someone.

A deeply dangerous — and blatantly retaliatory action against Colorado — by the Trump administration. NCAR is one of the most renowned scientific facilities in the WORLD — where scientists perform cutting-edge research everyday. We will fight this reckless directive with every legal tool we have.

It's like on the eve of WWII we decided to stop funding R&D into weapons systems to develop advanced aircraft, ships, and tanks. Climate change is going to kick our butts if we lose NCAR (and NOAA) at a time when climate change is increasing extreme weather events capable of crashing the economy.

NCAR is crucial to cutting-edge meteorology and improvements in weather forecasting. As others have noted, it's far, far bigger than a "climate" research lab. This is self-sabotage by a wildly ignorant and malicious administration cutting off their nose to spite their face. Find a better scapegoat.

NCAR does a whole lot more than just climate research, and I think calling it a climate research lab paints an incomplete picture. Atmospheric chemistry, severe thunderstorms, radar, software and tools, etc.

WTAF?! Also, for the love of God, can we not refer to NCAR As a “climate lab?” It does a hell of a lot more than just climate.

These people are nuts. NCAR developed the GPS dropsonde, which revolutionized the understanding of TC structure, improved forecasts, and validated remote sensing platforms, as documented in over 400 peer-reviewed publications in the last 25 years. And that’s just one of NCAR’s countless advances.
