I noticed this grid of sensors in Chicago and it turns out it's a relatively new and impressive network set up by the Chicago Department of Public Health, the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health, and some others. This clearly shows there's no escaping the wildfire smoke outdoors.

And, if we look, we see this in every recent climate-change related emergency -- in the impacts of wildfire on air quality, in flooding from a supercharged atmosphere, in extreme heatwaves, etc.

If you're not that familiar with Canada and see "Northern Ontario" being referenced in wildfire news, it's reasonable to think of the far north but it actually extends to the U.S. border and covers 88% of the land area of the province (and has just 6% of its people).

In addition to their more direct impacts on PM2.5 (small particulate matter), higher emissions (of NOx and VOCs) from wildfires also have made ozone pollution concentrations worse.

The fires in Ontario - like so many others - demonstrating viscerally how climate change perpetuates the displacement and dispossession of Indigenous peoples, who have least contributed to emissions and over and over again put their bodies on the line to prevent fossil fuel development.

It is not headed by a “climate critic“. It is headed by someone who is unqualified in this area, who cannot offer valid critiques but instead shares debunked claims, and who regularly attacks climate scientists. Like me.

This has now happened at enough universities to see the pattern. Conservatives show up, pull money from popular and useful programs to pay themselves vastly larger salaries than anyone before them, and then wallow in the stench of their failure, wondering why no one likes them.

Me: All I need is a seminar table. You know, a big rectangular table with enough seats for the students enrolled. Them: How about a TV screen in every direction you look? Me: Really, just a tabl— Them: Triangular tables so students aren't facing you OR each other? And with staggered heights?

Instead of a National Climate Assessment produced by hundreds of experts and a rigorous, years-long process, we appear to be getting one led by a climate denier “…who has been soliciting ideas on X for what he should include in the next version of the assessment.”

From a purely aesthetic perspective, I also just love the simplicity and wish more papers did counting, plotting raw data, and only broke out statistics and inference when it's absolutely needed. A lot of scientific questions are easier to answer than we make them.
