NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

But shall this crazed old man be tamely suffered to drag a whole ship’s company down to doom with him?

I’m watching Rob Reiner’s “The American President” in a fit of nostalgia and how did I not remember this being a climate movie? A rom-com centered entirely around emissions reduction legislation (in 1995 - if only).

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

When I was a young kid in Soviet Bulgaria (diplomat brat), my dad drove me and four siblings from Sophia to visit relatives in Tromso, Norway (above the arctic circle) and back. 2,700 miles each way. The man loved to drive. What an incredible trip.
