Almost six weeks ahead of schedule for the annual wildlife closure at Lagerman Reservoir outside of Longmont because it’s been so warm that the waterfowl are already setting to nesting.

I nominated several students to attend the ULW while at UWM, and about five of them were selected to attend. All raved about their experiences, and it helped them figure out what they wanted to do next. Even if it comes back in 2027, I grieve for this year’s juniors who won’t be able to participate.

Into IAH. My flight’s onboard navigation said 55°F at about 2500 ft AGL, dropping to 30°F at about 1500 ft AGL, only warming above 32°F ~800 ft AGL. Incredible warm nose aloft atop a near-surface cool layer. How long can surface sensible warming (among other processes) keep Houston liquid? #ams2026

For #AMS2026 - John and @pamknox.bsky.social report that Elevator #14 at the headquarters Hilton should be avoided at all costs. They had to be freed from it by Houston Fire Dept after it got stuck, and the FD told them it happens regularly with that elevator.

It’s not quite crème de la crème cold air, as Lance Bosart might say — it takes -40°C at 850 hPa — but INL at -37°C last night is pretty impressive nonetheless. There is an ample supply of low-level cold air pushing south to facilitate the impending winter storm.
