One of the important differences on the Front Range between December 2021 and today is the dryness that allowed for the Marshall Fire to take off. 30-day SPEI was extreme in 2021, while snow 2 weeks ago left fuels in a less receptive state. PSPS and lessons learned in 2021 likely helping out too.

This is incredible -- if the claims are true that the Skagit crest height was reduced by 4-5 ft (consistent with some forecasts), this emergency measure may have saved hundreds of millions in damage to Mt. Vernon and other towns along the Skagit river.

My heart aches for my friends and colleagues at Nebraska today. There are no winners, but I particularly feel for the students. They were sold a bill of goods by the university. It has been painful for all of the students left behind at UWM and I fear the same will be true at Nebraska.

Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.
