Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.

Reiner as both a political and cultural figure is a grand lesson in how art matters. It’s not just the “art films” that matter, it’s the fun stuff too, the silly stuff, the seemingly inconsequential. It all matters because we matter, it’s all that deep because so are we.

Rob Reiner was funny and gregarious, just like you’d expect. Michele Reiner always insisted on one conversation at a time around a dinner table so everyone could participate. Such a tragedy. All my sympathy to their family.
