One final post concerning #RiotWomen. It had a great soundtrack tonight to accompany the interconnecting storylines.

Next time someone in the industry says nobody’s interested in stories about mature strong women stick them in front of #RiotWomen. It’s struck a chord with the public because it’s so relatable. Hey, half the population are female and the menopause will come to all of them. Sally Wainwright aces it.

#RiotWomen is quite simply a riot. Loved it! We needed this drama.

Fact that neither Beth nor the other women in this opening episode are taken seriously by the worlds around them says so much about how society treats women over a *cough splutter* ‘a certain age.’ Ghastly demeaning term. Expected to keep lapping up whatever crap the world serves them. #RiotWomen

“And you thought ‘The Clash’ were angry.” ~ Beth, played by the incredible Joanna Scanlan. #RiotWomen is living proof that mature female characters are complex, exciting and have every right to their share of screen time. Cracking start.

FWIW I think UK politicians should accounts on BlueSky just as much as they do on other SM platforms. They might get a more rounded view of the people they serve. Frankly, nothing beats talking to people face to face. Above all else… listening and taking action.

If politicians are making up policy via X then little wonder they’re frequently accused of not being in touch with real people. (Yes, I know that’s always been bandied about, but…) SM isn’t real and ‘some’ folk vent for the sake of it, whether they believe what they’re posting or not. Talk to voters

Twitter left me before I left it. Simply wasn’t the SM platform it once was. All reasoned mature debate and humour disintegrated into a cesspit of hate, bitter battles, porn, bots, violent videos and incessant ads. BlueSky by contrast is what Twitter should’ve been. Think it’s even better now.

Very tired of writers who are considered "quintessential" always being, y'know, white guys. Tired of the archetypal idea of what a writer looks and sounds like, what personality type they have, how they write, what they write about, all being centered around white guys. It's so f*cking alienating.

There’s a comment piece in The Times about sickness benefits mysteriously going up and no mention of Covid, long Covid, the effects of lockdown etc. Boosters help people stay healthy, but now they are only available to the very old or people who can afford them.

Also depends a bit what kind of "uniformity of thought" we're talking about. I would hope faulty members and administrators uniformly think that democracy and academic freedom are good and to be protected; students "with different ideas" on that maybe need something other than college.

Pleased to report all clear on the editor-in-chief’s blood tests. Also put on some weight that in part prompted tests. He needs some extra pain relief now that the injection has worn off. He’s adapting to having a couple less back teeth. Vet: “He’s in remarkable condition for his age.” Proud of him!

Some much-needed very good news today. Dolly isn’t only a national treasure, she’s an international one.

IIRC for every £ of investment in the creative industries it generates £4 to the UK economy, making it one of the profitable industries we have. Not only that our creative artists and their work are the benchmark to which others look to when it comes to our high standards of creativity.

It also brings in billions to the U.K. because we have exceptionally well trained actors, film & theatre technicians, costume designers & stylists, plus state of the art studios. We have a thriving music industry, world renowned art comedy & dance, plus massively popular festivals, gigs & events.

Wonder how many of these politicians enjoy a night at the theatre, a film or read a book. See, mate! You may not like it, but the arts and humanities is and always was intended to be accessible to everyone. You just tried to appropriate it for yourselves and your ilk.
