Love that bad tech people were so excited about the digital employee who never gets sick and doesn’t talk back and turns out, once you get past a certain scale, you need to pay for the AI’s mental health treatment no matter what

The answer? Environmental regulations changed. That's why pollution got worse, electrity got more expensive and data centers got loud, sloppy and inefficient. They are building to the minimum level of compliance. And they will claim they were grandfathered in when regulations come back.

If those are things you don't want to give up, you're not advocating for ending data centers, YOU ARE WHO THEY ARE BEING BUILT FOR. Now ask yourself why you're upset about AI data centers. Do you think, maybe, you might be being intentionally misdirected?

Data centers were over 50 years old when the first LLMs came online, and many of you had them for neighbors and never noticed. Most are still not used by AI companies. The environmental regulations were relaxed five years ago and killed last year. When did your problems start?

the problems started 15 years ago when jobs tried to cure pancreatic cancer with a bottle of vinegar he got from a "shaman" in the mission district and the tech press got so sad when it inevitably failed they started promoting guys like elon, and it's been terminal decline ever since

Remember, everyone. It's us, or them. We can either have a real country led by normal ppl, or we can have a ravaged hellhole molested by a gaggle of thieves, rapists, and totalitarian fanatics.

if you're going to hold up the luddites as a model of resistance to techno-social changes you think are bad you should probably grapple with the fact that they very definitively lost.

BLS and federal data agencies are one of the great triumphs of liberal democracy: an extraordinary wealth of information, collected at the highest possible standard, insulated from politics, and astonishingly open to the public, literally provided freely for the benefit of the nation at large

Yes: billionaires and incels and MAGA WANT to be angry, they want to be aggrieved, and if you try to talk them out of their grievance, they will neatly elude you and find new reasons. The uncomfortable part is realizing that these kinds of people aren't categorically distinct from ourselves.

again, the 'most Americans can't even afford an unexpected expense' stuff comes from *online surveys by payday loan companies*. it is a publicity stunt *by one of the most exploitative parts of the financial industry* that is nevertheless spread enthusiastically by online communists.

Everyone knows that if you can’t afford a new car, you buy a used car, but if new cars stop getting made, suddenly the used cars get more expensive. However, new car manufacturing should be banned because trickle down economics doesn’t work. I am very smart. 😜

I think the relevant counterfactual when considering privacy related tradeoffs is "how easy would it be for a bad actor regime in the future to build this surveillance infrastructure if it didn't already exist". if the answer is 'pretty hard' then the tradeoff is real, 'very easy' less so

This is how MAGA operates: it tells people that they are absolutely entitled to their fury, regardless of whether the things they are furious about are real or fiction. It is compelling because it asks nothing from people while giving them permission to indulge in cathartic rage.

If you actually care about making the world better, “there is no such thing as the economy, no number or metric we can target, nothing concrete that can ever get better or worse, just endless subrational agony” is absolutely fatal to your ambition.
