I don’t hate the idea of AAA for ebikes. In fact I hope they go all the way and use some of the membership dues to lobby legislators on pro-ebike policy.

Flat tire? Dead battery? Speedy’s serves stranded Seattle riders as a quicker e-bike picker-upper
Tyler Swartz, a Seattle native and cycling enthusiast, was laid off from his tech job at Reddit and wanted to start something that served Seattle's community of e-bikers.

I feel like some majors, like CS and especially math, should be split up into pure vs applied pathways. The applied pathway teaches you all the job-useful stuff and the pure pathway is all the theoretical stuff. They shouldn't be fully separate from each other, but it's about what they focus on.

Cryptocurrency, prediction markets, and online gambling have some important differences but they share a common exploitative go-to-market strategy: Lie to low-information, low-inhibition men at scale to provide liquidity for professional traders.

Really interesting mix of reactions to this in the replies and quotes * Sympathy for this kid * Suggestion they change majors and teach themselves to code * The ick: bro coder edition * They’ll be the most employable CS grad in about 5 years * Is education about mastery or employability in a trade?

AI can save us from the mind-numbing implementation tedium that gives programming a bad rap as boring nerd shit. Imagine telling a writer that a deep familiarity with typewriter ribbon maintenance is a critical pre-req to telling a story

If this is a common experience for people pursuing a CS degree, it won't be long before programmers who can actually understand code and write it themselves will be a rarity, like FORTRAN programmers of a previous generation.

I found the concept of Claude as a fictional character noteworthy. We’ve known this all along but it goes way under discussed the extent to which this character is a human mask on something profoundly alien.

Okay serious question, I ask this with total sincerity. Is this a new Genre of Guy for literally anyone? I've met so many of these guys, they're a dime a dozen, and invariably they have no good ideas and don't actually build things, but have an immense degree of misplaced pride in being Good Coders.

i should tie this back in more clearly: having students route their CS assignments through genAI makes a lot of sense if you think they've already got coding on lock and don't need to improve it. that is not true of most students, but it is true of the top 1/3 who can self-direct their learning.
