I legitimately think one of the absolute poisons of American political discourse is how âbut will this matter electorallyâ has become the only metric used by basically the entire non-partisan media for assessing a storyâs importance

Rape is the distillation of the far-right worldview that Trump embodies: a gleefully sadistic act of domination carried out as fulfillment of a supposedly natural hierarchy. It would be weird if Trump wasnât a rapist, given his ideological commitmentsâwhich is before you get to all the accusations.

"We can't reform the Dems, we need a new party" is the political equivalent of "we can't fix climate change on earth, we need to colonize Mars" in that however hard the former is, the latter is *way* harder and you'll just need the D voter base so you wind up with the Schmemocrats, anyway

you cannot create a viable third party without changing the constitution. to change the constitution, you need control of one of the major political parties, at minimum. anyone refusing to accept this is a fucking child i'm tired of entertaining.

youâd have to rebuild so much financial, political, and legal infrastructure, and thatâs a lot of capital to expend when you can just directly choose your nominees for the democratic party in a primary. this is pretty straightforward imo

Parties are shells that are continuously remade. Compare Ds/Rs in 1868, 1904, 1932, 1972, & today on class, race, gender, immigration, & religion. Most of us want more parties, but that isnât* viable w/o proportional representation. Since 1972, all nominees are directly chosen by voters. Do that.

There's a whole lot of people who like to say they know a lot about politics, but when you look at what they say (and the bigger tell, what they think other politicians do and believe) it's clear that their understanding is a funhouse mirror version from memes, YouTube, and podcasts

The fact that a lot of leftists despise Parks and Rec - one of the best and most sympathetic depictions of non-cop government in modern media - is a symptom of the fact that a lot of the left has no idea how to actually implement the policy proposals they want to enact.

I continue to believe that the Trump *campaign* successfully convinced quite a lot of people that mass deportations did not mean mass deportations; that it meant targeted enforcement against âthe bad guys.â The problem for the Trump *administration* is that no one believes that anymore.
