The left needs to stop being afraid of the state. Like, I get it, the American state has often been hostile to the left. But the solution to that is to take that power and use it for good rather than evil.

This crystallized for me during the shutdown, when a well-meaning person suggested that the solution to federal employees' financial pain was to do mutual aid. The fact that even $2,000 a month for each federal employee amounts to $4 billion per month in mutual aid did not seem to faze them.

Am I semi-hostile to "mutual aid" as a concept? In a sense I am - because I feel like the idea has captured a section of the left who are well-meaning but do not understand scale or adequately value state capacity.

I know people hate Will Stancil, but this is simply objectively true. The democratic socialist future is not piecemeal private mutual aid, it's sufficient taxation and spending to sustain the state capacity to bureaucratically ensure that no American goes hungry, homeless, or without health care.
