Lemme be absolutely clear *every* H-1B visa employee at my (large cap) US firm was summoned back to the office from wherever they were in the world today for this crap. For some, it was utter panic. Appalling.

H1B holders are net job creators. Ending the H1B visa will not result in more hiring of Americans or hiring overseas, it will simply destroy jobs and fewer people will be hired. It is racism shooting itself in the foot as usual.

I guess "a US official says" is all we've got to hang our hats on now. This is what happens when you have policy by white house decree, kept secret until 36 hours before taking effect, and drafted by nincompoops selected for loyalty, not competence.

As an #H1B holder (not in tech) I also woke up this Saturday to an email from my employer's international office with guidance to cancel international travel for the foreseeable future and to come back to the country today before midnight for those currently outside.

To those saying permitted protests aren’t really protests: fine, call them rallies. But lots of people who are for good things and against bad things are kind of scared they might be outnumbered. Despair and isolation are the enemies of collective action. Crowds of like minded people are energizing.

But you aren’t on H1b and in the shoes of the people who have built their lives from scratch in the US. So maybe stfu.

Or maybe actually the fee will only apply to new applicants! If you are an H-1B holder abroad right now you have to choose between the very first flight to any US airport, or betting the chance to ever see your dog again on the words of an unnamed WH official over the letter of the OE.

Important to remember that H1B visa holders have their whole life in the US. The home they rent or own is here. Their family. Their kids go to school here. Being locked out of the US is also in many cases rendering them homeless and away from their family, with no obvious path to return

Every one of these immigration policies is a family separation policy.

Over the last 20 years I have spent a lot of time at tech companies that hired H1B workers, and I’ve interviewed many of them. I’ve never seen a situation where a company hired an H1B worker to save money. I have seen many of them hired because they were truly outstanding engineers.

Like, I really really don't wanna hear the "H-1B is handout to big tech and H-1B workers are scabs who undercut wages" bullshit today. H-1B has had a prevailing wage requirement forever. People make major life choices based on promises from the US government that are being broken.

Importantly, the employer files the petition, so the employer would be required to include a $100,000 check with the petition. But the ban on entry appears to also apply to ANYONE with an H-1B currently, and says that petitions must be "supplemented" with a $100,000 fee, so who knows who pays that.

The H-1B executive order reads like a procedural shitshow to me. I'm seeing media reports that just copy the administration's line on what it actually does. Journalists, get a quote from AILA please. Or, like, any immigration lawyer.
