Buyouts are a classic example: you get less than residuals, but most take it because someone else will step in if you don’t. I’d also worry about what happens to those voice models afterwards- it’s impossible to keep tabs on especially if there’s a hack or leak.

Just because some voices have agreed to their voice being fed into AI for a specific project, does not necessarily make it OK. Actors have been routinely asked to agree to things that undermine their earning power for decades, it’s a highly competitive market and the reason unions are important.

I get that it's a more "ethical" use of AI, and that the voice actors agreed to it beforehand, but it still leaves me icky when the express purpose is so that they don't have to have the actors come in for future recording sessions. I'd rather they just don't use the tech at all

Not to be the fun police but I do hope people know that Arc Raiders does use generative AI for voice acting, and by supporting the game you're letting higher-ups know that this is an okay practice. They try to downplay this on the Steam store page by describing the AI usage as vaguely as possible.

Heads up for folx playing Arc Raiders: Embark has openly stated (in an interview with GamesRadar+), that the game uses the same AI voice tech as The Finals, and the CEO has talked about using AI to generate 3D models from YouTube rips. If you're anti-AI you should not be playing Arc Raiders!
