Old folks who were sure they were saying goodbye to their best friends. That’s what this article is talking about. People to whom life happened who are trying to do right by their pets. Not fair weather owners. That happened so rarely to my sister she’d remark on it, surprised.

My story isn’t at all unique. Many disabled people find themselves in similar positions. You used to be able to see data on the intersection of poverty and disability from the government; not sure if you still can. Or you can hear from my sister how many old folks she helped care for their pets.

She worked like hell to make sure those animals did not end up with her, because 95% of the time they were worse off. It’s not good for animals to go back to the shelter and lose their beloved humans. If you care about animals, you keep them together with their people.

If you actually care about the welfare of animals, you do not want that. You want animals with their people, as long as they are safe places for them. My sister works in rescues. She’s taken in surrenders from DV situations, people going through cancer, when they couldn’t afford vet bills.

I’d have loved to stay well enough to keep working, but we don’t get to pick, and certainly not during a pandemic where all safety precautions got thrown to the wind for a sense of false normality. With the difficulties he had, returning him to the shelter would have been a death sentence.

I hung up and cried. We spent the last 5.5 years thinking first, foremost, and sometimes solely about what was best for that dog. He was sometimes the only reason I could scrape myself out of bed. And he loved us so deeply there was no other choice for him. Even if we weren’t “secure.”

Disability never came through. We fed the pets on donated food and ourselves only by the grace of my family. Pip got sick—really sick. I called the vet, asking if there was any help available. The tech sighed impatiently. “If you aren’t secure enough to provide for your dog, why do you have him?”

I had to stop working. We had to downsize. We debated if it would be better for Pip to go to someone with a bigger house, but he had so much trauma it would have probably meant the worst. We kept him and our cats, doing the best we could while I applied for disability.

2020 hit, I got OG COVID, and found myself in hideous amounts of pain for months and months. If I wanted to work, those walks became Jason’s responsibility. 2021 was when the fatigue and heart problems started to catch up with me. In 2022, I got Omicron and didn’t recover.

There are a lot of reasons, leading with “poor people should have joys in their lives too,” but here’s a story. When we brought Pippin (dog) home in 2019, we were both employed, had stable housing, even managed to save a little bit. I was able to walk more, and we figured it would be good.
