Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc. If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

Some say that making a smaller game or simpler game are ways to cut down on dev time. This is also true. But if you're making a game of any size that has any sort of consistent production methodology, a good way to make everything take longer is to change standards and pipelines in production.
