No one ever proposes making people 50+ do national service or some such because no one believes you can make them do anything, while it's generally accepted that young people exist to be commanded and pay for everyone else's bullshit.

there is a point here i want to amplify. the free speech defenders of the mainstream seem to have no awareness that actual free speech is often more fractious and destabilizing than civil and respectful. a society where speech is genuinely free isn’t the deferential space they want it to be.

One idea that's shaped this country is that it's un-American to suggest that the dominant could or should face consequences. You clear the land, stake a claim, do and say want you want, and move on like it never happened. That's the way things should be. No one has a right to say any different.

My stance in 2015 was that folks should be able to say whatever they want, that saying someone should be fired is, in fact, an instantiation of free speech, and that a line should be drawn when it comes to state interventions, which Republicans were already attempting across the country at the time.
