Individuals fall outside of the schema of dichotomous sex for many reasons. The specific ways in which trans women fall outside of the schema and are punished for it constitute transmisogyny. "Third-sexing" is not acknowledging that sex isn't binary. It is a violence, a dehumanisation.

Non-binary people can be third-sexed as well, because third-sexing is not recognition but the denial of it. The denial of legibility, dignity, and humanity itself. It is a way of reinforcing gender as dichotomous by punishing, sequestering, and segregating those who dare to fall outside of it.

Since the concept is being misunderstood and misused, let's talk about what "third-sexing" means as a mechanism of transphobia. I built on an idea first discussed in @juliaserano.bsky.social's "Whipping Girl" that discussed how, interpersonally, cis people refuse to acknowledge our genders.
