It's very apparent that "board games" can mean very different things to different people when one game feels the need to warn you that it can take up to 30 minutes to play, while another prides itself on being "quick playing" on the basis that a minimal two-player game should only take 2 to 3 hours.

One thing that I found really curious about TTRPG rules is the unsaid rule where if you specify that something is allowed under a circumstance, it therefore serves to stand that it is not allowed under any other circumstance. This is a tool that is often used unintentionally.

I do think a lot of the indie ttrpg scene as it exists is built out of a pretty specific understanding of what an RPG is based on effectively the OSR concept of what a ttrpg is, and as a result a lot of games just go by without ever being really seen by the scene at large

How it feels talking people into trying a medium crunch ttRPG when they inherently see it as either low or high crunch depending on their own preference (for the opposite):

Girl Frame should be getting far more flowers than it has been receiving. It is an actual innovation in the TTRPG scene that elevates roleplaying not just into something that happens around OSR gameplay but a core function of the game itself.

I think people confuse Art and Style when it comes to TTRPGs a lot tbh. You can have a lot of good art, but that doesn't give your TTRPG an actual "style" in terms of how it feels to read or interact with

#rpgtheory It might be tempting for us as game designers to think that games' rules "constrain" gameplay, or that gameplay "enacts" the game's rules, but I really think it's the opposite. A game's rules wait inert for you to reach out, in the moment of gameplay, and choose to bring them to bear.
