Book 25 of 2026: @catrionaward.bsky.social's Nowhere Burning I *loved* this one: it has a twisty plot about a group of feral kids living in the ruins of a mountain compound once owned by a famous actor who was up to some pretty bad stuff. What are they doing there and what are they hiding?

Disney will have to go back to making garbage the old-fashioned way: franchise bullshit designed by committees of money men with a rotating cast of neutered creatives who can't actually do anything with the properties in the Mouse's portfolio.

Book 24 of 2026: R. L. Boyle's Temple Fall This novel felt like a mash-up of Blumhouse-style horror and Gothic novel. Some kids are driven into a haunted house by a storm and leave with a curse that kills them on their 18th birthdays. Overall good, but the two kinds of story here didn't fully mesh.

Young Sheldon? They should make Dead Sheldon, where you just watch the progress of decomposition each week.

Book 23 of 2026: @marklawrenceauthor.bsky.social's Red Sister Look, I'm a sucker for "mystic, battle-trained deathnuns," so this was right up my alley. The only questions is whether my willpower will hold for me to pace out the remaining volumes instead of shotgunning them frantically.

The idea that there are certain skillsets necessary for creative work that only some people are capable of doing is anathema to me. "You can't do the layout on an rpg book yourself; you need to hire a professional graphic designer"--absolutely not. You can learn those skills and do it yourself.

Book 22 of 2026: @angelaslatter.bsky.social's A Forest, Darkly This was very tonally interesting: the early bits have a somewhat cozy feel, with a young witch seeking shelter with an older woman, but as the novel goes on more and more horrifying things come to the fore. My god, the summer husbands!

Book 21 of 2026: Justin D. Hill, Cadia Stands This Warhammer 40k novel didn't really do it for me. It's kind of all over the place, giving different perspectives on Cadia's fall that didn't really add up to much. I think a more focused narrative with a central character would have helped.

Book 20 0f 2026: Anna Kovatcheva's She Made Herself a Monster A village headman in a Bulgarian village abuses his position (and everyone in his orbit), and then a fraudulent vampire hunter comes to town. This is a remarkable novel; best thing I read last month, hands down.

I've been watching the first season of The Mayfair Witches, and it's honestly pretty fun. People are never going to say it equals Interview with the Vampire, but I kinda prefer Witches' horniness to the heavy dead bedroom energy of any scene in Vampire with Louis and Armand

Literal science fiction double feature today: Tron (1982) and The Thirteenth Floor (1999). I loved Tron as a kid; I think it actually holds up. Those of you who grew up with great cgi will have a difficult time understanding how mind-blowing the fx in Tron were at the time.

Book 17 of 2026: Michelle Tang, DuMort The attraction between the main characters (one-sided as it is) didn't do much for me in the early portions of the book, and I'm not sure everything works on a plot level in this novella, but the weird Cronenbergian resolution certainly had some teeth to it.
