Already seeing people try to minimize Megan Wachspress’ experience with Daniel Biss, in the name of “real survivors.” Let me set the record straight: if when you read something like this, and the first move you make is to try to discredit womens' experiences, you don’t give a fuck about survivors.

Daniel Biss doesn’t deserve points for not going out of his way to harm the career of his young female student. If you read Megan Wachspress’ testimony, she explicitly points to Biss as the reason she left a field she loved. He didn’t *need* to talk shit about her. The damage was already done.

If he's going to get a national profile on the strength of a younger woman's campaign, I'm going to come out and say it: during his short-lived tenure as a math professor, Biss had an inappropriate romantic relationship with one of his undergraduate students. I was that student.

The question is always "what if a kid is wrongfully transitioned" and never "what if a trans kid is denied the ability to transition and endures years of excruciating dysphoria and has to have multiple surgeries later in life to fix the issues caused by going through the wrong puberty."

I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

Truly astounding as a trans person to watch your community be told we're not worthy of consideration by Democrats on Monday, be told to be silent and grateful all of Tuesday, and by Wednesday an entire state has criminalized trans citizens' existence.

I think every few years, we should just round up op-ed writers and count how many of their predictions ended up being accurate, and if they got more than 50% wrong, they have to get a new career. It’s not personal, but in most fields, you simply can’t be wrong that often without consequences.

If you don’t want people using DIY HRT, make gender-affirming care accessible. Make it so trans people don’t need to wait years to get care they need today. Just like abortion, gender-affirming care is necessary healthcare. People will take steps to get it regardless of whether it’s legal or not.
