The Manhattan Institute's City Journal today published a piece anchored in a favorite chestnut of both the landlord lobby and the leftists no-development types: That ~50,000 rent stabilized apartments are sitting empty. Except, that's not true.

Weekend PATH service will be getting even worse this month—trains from 33rd Street to Journal Square will detour via Hoboken AND Exchange Place. 38 minutes to take a trip that's 4 miles as the crow flies. AND service will still be cut in half, only every 20 minutes.

It's always astounding to me that just 30 years ago, the Port Authority could put together one of the most forward-looking payment integration schemes in the world, and work hard to get other agencies on board, all out of a sense of civic duty. I miss that Port Authority.

I assumed this article was about zoning, because that is the most common legal tool used to block projects people in power don't like. The zoning code in Selah, WA requires 2x as many parking spaces for mosques as any other religious building. This is totally legal and many people approved it. 😵💫

I had a chat with the train driver about them. He says batteries aren't used for traction power on their own, rather they give the train an extra boost when leaving stations. This allows them to downsize the diesel motor, and put less strain on the electric grid near stations when trains accelerate
