I've been working with a group of grad students from UW's Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering on School Streets and it has been a lot of fun. After phase one of their study, it's clear that stakeholders appreciate School Streets but want them to be safer and more useful.

My first advocacy effort (a safe routes to school project) was blocked by the Landmarks Board. One thing you learn is that everyone involved (judge, jury, and opposing counsel) is an advocate for historic preservation. No one with power is representing safety or any other public interest.

This is a really bad look for Historic Seattle.

My experience with SDOT during the design phase is that they consistently trade away safety, either in advance or in response to pressure.

I keep wanting Toronto to be like Europe but it’s more like Queens with an extra helping of Midtown and a few strips of Brooklyn.

This should be a neighborhood center in the comp plan.

I don't expect everyone to care as much about information design as I do but...the TTC passenger information display could make better use of space.

The most disgraceful thing we did was turn the Memorial Plaza into a parking lot. While most of the parking remains, I’m happy we are at least giving the Memorial Wall some additional breathing room.

Pike Place Market just released new sales data for Feb 2026. Looks like Jan+Feb 2026 had 11% higher sales than Jan+Feb 2025 (before the pedestrian pilot)! Congrats Seattle, you managed to find a way to shop at the market in the dead of winter without driving your cars through the middle of it.
